Angela Eagle MP campaigns in Stafford on National Day of Action for an Energy Price Freeze

Angela Eagle MP, Shadow Leader of the House of Commons, visited Stafford on the 9th November 2013 in a bid to highlight Labour’s campaign to freeze energy prices.

Angela Eagle MP joined local campaigners as part of Labour’s nationwide Day of Action on Energy Prices.

Labour’s Shadow Leader of the House of Commons, Angela Eagle MP said:

“People in Stafford are struggling with the rising cost of living. Under David Cameron, average household bills for gas and electricity have gone up £300. That is why Labour is calling for a freeze on gas and electricity bills now to help people with the cost of living crisis.”

Angela Eagle MP added:

“If David Cameron refuses to do this, and we get into government in 2015, we will freeze gas and electricity bills until 2017 and break up the big energy companies so that we can all get a fair deal. This will save a typical household £120 and an average business of £1,800 a year.

"With warnings of more price rises this winter, Stafford needs a One Nation Labour Government more than ever.”

Local campaigners, led by Parliamentary candidates, took part in a co-ordinated, nationwide campaign for an energy price freeze at locations across the region. Including the Parliamentary seats of:

• Birmingham Yardley
• Burton
• Cannock Chase
• Dudley South
• Halesowen and Rowley Regis
• North Warwickshire
• Nuneaton
• Redditch
• Rugby
• Stafford
• Stourbridge
• Tamworth
• Warwick and Leamington
• Wolverhampton South West
• Worcester

Labour recently tabled a motion in the House of Commons calling on the Government to freeze energy prices as the cost of living spirals.

Not one Tory MP in the West Midlands backed Labour’s motion to freeze energy prices.

Labour’s Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary Caroline Flint MP, commenting after the vote on Labour’s energy price freeze in the House of Commons, said:

“Millions of households and businesses face a winter of misery after David Cameron and Nick Clegg led their MPs through the voting lobbies to vote against Labour’s price freeze. This vote showed yet again how out of touch this Government is. People are seeing the cost of heating their home rising by 10% this winter. But rather than standing up to the big energy companies David Cameron and his MPs let them off the hook by allowing them to impose another round of inflation-busting price hikes this winter.”

Caroline Flint MP added:

“Hardworking people want action now to tackle the cost of living crisis. We need Ed Miliband’s plan to freeze energy bills to save money for 27 million households and 2.4 million businesses and reset the market to deliver fairer prices in the future.”
