Labour's new Parliamentary Candidate for Coventry North East
Cllr Colleen Fletcher
Labour Party members have selected Councillor Colleen Fletcher as their next Parliamentary candidate to replace Bob Ainsworth MP in Coventry North East for the next General Election.
58-year old Cllr Colleen Fletcher said:
“I am born and bred in Coventry. I went to school at Richard Lee Primary School, Lyng Hall Comprehensive School, and Henley College. My mum, Dot Dalton, was a councillor, and I was raised in a compassionate, caring, Labour family. I know Coventry like the back of my hand, it’s part of me and that is why I care about what happens here."
Colleen has served as a councillor for 13 years. Currently, she is a councillor for Upper Stoke on Coventry City Council and is also the Chair of the Labour Group and the Chair of the Scrutiny Committee on the Council.
She beat fellow councillor Faye Abbott, academic Dr Rhandir Auluck, and long-standing youth services union rep Pat Seaman.
Cllr Fletcher, Labour's new Parliamentary Candidate for Coventry North East, is now set to be Coventry's first female MP since 1979 in one of the country's safest Labour seats.
Cllr Colleen Fletcher, Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Coventry North East, said:
"I am honoured to have been selected by members as Labour’s candidate to be the next MP for Coventry North East.
“What happens in Coventry matters to me.
“Local people who I speak to tell me time and time again that prices are rising, but their wages aren’t. People are being hit by a cost of living crisis, but this country’s Tory-led Government is doing nothing to help.
“If elected in 2015 Labour would freeze energy bills for 20 months and create a tough new watchdog with the power to force energy companies to cut their prices when the cost of energy falls.
“Locally I will be working closely with Labour Councillors and MP Bob Ainsworth to deliver for local people in Coventry North East.”
A West Midlands Labour Party spokesperson said:
"Colleen Fletcher was raised and lives in Coventry. She is a community campaigner. She has got everything needed to take on the Tories.
“Colleen will be going door-to-door to speak to local people about their concerns and explaining why we need a One Nation Labour Government to turn this country around.”
